Summary

We have put our Cambridge Latin Course textbooks online on this website. Access to these 'WebBooks' will eventually be via paid subscription, but for now they are freely available for you to try. We may provide grants to some departments to cover the cost of access, enabling us to give some schools free, or reduced rate, access to all our resources.

Background

Since 2012 we have been providing WebBooks for teachers and students in North America, where they have been very well received.

Our WebBooks give access to the pages of the textbook via your internet browser. They are internet based, so access to them requires an internet connection. We developed them for North America because teachers and students wanted the ability to see our textbooks on devices such as desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Some schools in North America have stopped using physical textbooks altogether and now use only our WebBooks. The web-based nature of these 'books' makes them accessible on almost any device.

Free trials

The best way to find out what our WebBooks are like is to try them for yourself, now, for free:

Web-based delivery

Web-based delivery allows us to make our work much more widely, and democratically, available. However, different browsers render text and images in different ways, so don't be surprised if you encounter the following:

  • poor layout and display on older Samsung tablets;
  • poor layout on a few of the pages, particularly with images and captions out of position. This is still a work in progress and we'll improve these layout issues over time.

Please let us know if you find any errors and we'll work to fix them right away.
You may also notice:

  • slow load time the first time you load a page, particularly if the page includes large or multiple images. Pages should load rapidly once they have been viewed the first time.

Navigation

  • If your browser window is large enough, two pages will be displayed side by side. Otherwise, one page will be displayed at a time.
  • To move forward or back through a Stage, either click/tap in the footer (i.e. below the horizontal bar at the bottom of the page) or, on some devices, swipe right-to-left/left-to-right.
  • If you would like to make the pages larger, zoom in using the zoom function in your browser (often Ctrl +).

Cost

In North America, the WebBooks are included as part of the cost of website subscription (the CSCP website is not available for free as it is in the UK). An individual account costs £9.50 for a year. Annual school subscriptions start at £39.75 for 5 students and additional students are charged at £1.95 per student. Subscriptions for other lengths of time are available and charged pro rata. It is likely that we will eventually use a similar pricing structure for access to the UK WebBooks.

Timescale to availability

Students and teachers may start using the WebBooks now, either individually or with their classes. It is likely that we will introduce a paywall for access in due course, perhaps with the eventual introduction of a UK 5th edition.
